High school volleyball starts Monday

The high school volleyball season begins Monday, with most teams including Region III-5A finalist College Station, starting on Tuesday.

The Lady Cougars open at home against Fulshear, the team that knocked them out of the regional tournament in 2020. Fulshear reached the state finals that season.

Former Bryan coach Ashley Davis takes over in College Station. She coached the last three years at Hays. As Bryan’s coach, Davis led the Lady Vikings to four consecutive playoff appearances.

Bryan’s Kayli Kane also returns to the area. She was an assistant at Rudder and the head coach at College Station. Kane, who won district championships in each of her four years with the Lady Cougars, has been coaching at Montgomery for the last four seasons.

Iola is the highest-ranked Class 2A team in the area on the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll. Jamie McDougald’s Lady Bulldogs are ranked fifth, but two other teams made the TGCA’s preseason poll. Leon, which will again be a district opponent for Iola in District 22-2A, is at No. 7 and Bremond is 8th.

Defending state champion Beckville defeated Iola in the Region III-2A finals in 2021.

There are no area teams ranked in the TGCA preseason Top 10 in a classification other than 2A.

St. Joseph, which advanced to the state finals in TAPPS 2A, starts at home Tuesday against Latexo. St. Joseph fell to Lubbock’s All Saints Episcopal in the state championship match. They’ll be one of three Bryan-College Station private school teams playing at Galveston O’Connell’s tournament this week.

Caldwell opens its 2022 tournament season in Columbus Thursday, where the host Columbus Lady Cards won 38 games last season to qualify for the UIL State Tournament. The Caldwell Lady Hornets begin the season again at home against traditional power Leon, a highlight of the opening week.

Class 2A state finalist Thrall begins the season Tuesday, part of a three-team match in Cameron.

There are tournaments crowded with area teams in the opening week. Including the host Lady Eagles, Fairfield hosts seven of them, with the Navasota Lady Rattlers welcoming in six area squads.  The home team Lady Yoe  are one of five area teams playing matches in Cameron.
