High school volleyball — Aug. 15-20

The Fairfield Lady Eagles swept all of their matches in their home tournament last weekend. After a season-opening win at Gatesville, the Lady Eagles have not yet lost a set so far this season. They defeated Iola in the Fairfield Tournament final, 27-25, 25-18. Fairfield began the season with a 3-0 victory at Gatesville.

Fairfield is fifth in the latest state rankings.

Fairfield’s tournament play this week is at the Lu Allen Memorial Tournament in Graham, a two-day tournament where the Lady Eagles finished fifth last season. Fairfield will play Denver City, Vernon, Klondike and Windthorst in Friday matches.

Rudder followed up Tuesday wins over Lexington and Huntsville by going 8-1 in the Tyler ISD tournament to win the consolation championship. The Lady Rangers’ only loss came against 4A’s 20th-ranked Pleasant Grove, where they fell, 24-26, 25-23, 25-17.

The start has earned Rudder a No. 11 ranking this week in the TGCA state volleyball poll. The Brenham Cubettes, who will be a district opponent for Rudder, are ranked 13th.

Rudder’s next match is at Caney Creek Tuesday night.

Navasota has jumped to the top spot in the 4A poll after an 8-0 opening week.

There is a three-team get-together in Iola on Tuesday that features some of Class 2A’s top teams, and traditional powers. No. 4 Iola hosts Burton and seventh-ranked Bremond.

Also on Tuesday, Milano is at home against defending Class 1A state champion and No. 1-ranked Fayetteville. Fayetteville is coming off a tournament championship at Bellville Faith Academy and has started the season with a 9-0 record.

For area teams, the Leon tournament is the busiest of the year, with the Lady Cougars welcoming in 14 more area squads. The tournament begins on Thursday. Leon is ranked second in Class 2A.

Bryan and Brenham will compete in the 45th Fraulein Volleyfest in New Braunfels. It’s a 40-team tournament with teams from as far away as El Paso (Franklin). Arlington Martin is the defending champion.

Four area teams will compete in the Pflugerville VolleyPfest tournament. College Station is in Pool 2 with Poth, Harker Heights and Lake Belton. Pool 2 will play at Hendrickson.

Cameron is grouped with Cedar Ridge, Fredericksburg and Georgetown East View in Pool 4, which is set for Weiss High School.

Pool 5 consists of Lexington, Madison, Stony Point and the home team for these matches, Pflugerville Connally.

College Station is in a group, Pool 8, with Midland, Brentwood Christian and Leander Glenn. They will play at Pflugerville High.
