WHITEHOUSE — Sarah Wombie and Mahayla Mitchell each hit a three-run homer, powering the Whitehouse Ladycats to an 8-3 win over the Bryan Lady Vikings Friday and a sweep of the best-of-3 Class 5A bi-district softball series.

With two outs in the third inning, Rylee Cortez doubled and Jocelyn Downs was hit by a pitch. Wombie followed with her home run to left field to give Whitehouse a 4-0 lead.

Mitchell’s home run to center came an inning later. Mitchell earned pitching wins in both games, following her Wednesday no-hitter by allowing four hits on Friday. She struck out four and walked three.

Bryan clawed back to a 7-3 deficit when Brenda Sanchez doubled to score Jessica Adams and Jade Chavarria in the fifth inning. Bryan’s Rebekah Hubacek, who started the game at pitcher, had singled home Natalie Garcia in the top of the fourth for the initial run of the series by the Lady Vikings. It cut the lead to 4-1.

The Lady Vikings’ fourth error brought home Whitehouse’s eighth run.

The loss ended the season for Bryan, 18-5A’s second-place team, with a 23-14 record. Whitehouse (18-10-1) will play Waller or Elgin in the area playoffs.

Whitehouse jumped in front 1-0 in the second inning. Maddie Wright was safe on an error as Chloe Hortman scored from third base.

Whitehouse loaded the bases with one out in the first inning, but Hubacek got her only two strikeouts, retiring Sierra Stone and Jadyn Gunn to end the threat.

The Lady Vikings’ first hit of the series came on Bri Pendergraff’s two-out triple to right in the top of the second, but Bryan did not score.

Cortez was two for three with two doubles for Whitehouse. Two of the four runs scored against Bryan relief pitcher Jessica Adams were earned. Adams struck out four and walked two in three and a third innings.
