First in a series of six

Fayetteville’s Jaeger, Ira’s Pena share player of year 

BRYAN  – Ira senior Jeren Pena and Fayetteville junior Jack Schley were co-players of the year on the Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association Class A all-state baseball team.

Pena, who was the player of the year last year, was 9-0 pitching in 48 innings with 104 strikeouts. The right-hander, who has signed with McMurry, allowed seven runs, but all were unearned. Pena, who also played shortstop, batted .341 with 30 runs batted in and 35 runs scored. Schley was 7-0 with a 1.36 ERA, striking out 78 in 5 11/3 innings for the state champs. Schley, who played outfield when not pitching, batted .470 with 28 RBIs and 30 runs scored.
