Final in a series of six

LONGVIEW — State champion Weslaco earned both top honors with the release of the Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 6A All-State Softball Team on Friday.

Pitcher Madelynn Cantu, who won 30 total games – including both games at the UIL State Softball Tournament – was named Player of the Year, while Mario Rodriguez was named Coach of the Year.

Voting was conducted by TSWA members based on nominations from coaches and media members from around the state.

Cantu finished the year with a 30-5 record to go along with a 1.98 earned run average, 196 strikeouts and 29 walks in 195.2 innings pitched.

Weslaco went 37-6 for the season, including a 5-3 win in 13 innings against Denton Guyer in the state semifinals and an 11-9 win over Midway in the championship game.
